Take in two downtown centers, Portland and Vancouver, as well as rivers, wetlands, and islands with the best seat in the house on this 35 mile round trip helicopter tour.
Depart Portland’s downtown helipad and fly up and over Portland’s famed bridges. Head north along the Willamette River towards its confluence with the Columbia River. You’ll know you’re at the confluence when you see Sauvie’s Island ahead. This island is famed in the region for its large natural wildlife preserve where thousands of migratory birds pause on their journey.
Turn east now and cruise over the Columbia River where you might see a large cargo ship heading towards Portland. On the other side of the Columbia is Washington state. Fly over the wetlands along the river and across Lake Vancouver. Just east of Lake Vancouver you’ll see downtown Vancouver. Cruise over Vancouver and look below for Fort Vancouver (the historic base of the Hudson Bay Company in the Pacific Northwest). On clear days you will have views of up to 6 volcanic peaks of the Cascade Mountains.
Continue eastward up the Columbia River to Government Island. There you will turn south back and just as you cross the Columbia again you’ll be right over the top of Portland International Airport. Watch the jets taxi for departure and maybe even land as you sail towards Portland. Traverse Portland’s east side and come back into the Willamette River basin. Sweep around Downtown Portland for a final shot of the skyscrapers and city scene before landing back on the rooftop heliport. On completion of your journey you will have a wonderful appreciation of the topography and beauty of two of the Northwest’s most famous rivers and most famous cities.
